The American Bicycle Builder Project

Some are teachers, some are artists, some engineers, others champion cyclists and backyard blacksmiths. Together they are uniquely American. They are the American bicycle builders. This they have in common, yet each builder’s journey and perspective is as varied as the head badges on the frames they built. This is the story of an object and the people who gave it a unique spirit, a soul. At 3bbb we are dedicated to celebrating the unique character and preserving the stories of the American bicycle builder.

Sean Yates - Eddy Merckx, Team Motorola

An authentic Sean Yates Merckx Motorola team bike from 1994. The team build book notes that the bike was ridden in the Tour DuPont where he finished second on a stage into Asheville, NC. 1994 was also the year Yates wore yellow at the Tour de France.

1979 Richard Sachs touring

This is a rare touring frame by Richard Sachs. Of all the bikes he has produced, only a small handful have been touring frames. The seat height as shown in photos is set at 73cm. It is stamped as a 56cm frame.

S.W. Cotten by Bill Hurlow

Sam Cotten ran a bike shop named "Bicycle East" in NYC. He contracted with Bill Hurlow to build and import bikes to the US. Only a handful were made, perhaps 80, maybe 100? This is a Hurlow-built bike imported under the S.W. Cotton name.

Jeffrey Bock with full Zeus

Jeffrey Bock has been building custom bicycles for more than 50 years. From his shop in Ames, Iowa, Bock offers full restorations and repaints, as well as building fully custom bicycles. This Bock is built with a full Zeus component group.
